KURT BARNHART TO BECOME NEW DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION HEAD FOR K-STATE AT SALINA
SALINA -- Following a national search, R. Kurt Barnhart has been named head of Kansas State University at Salina's aviation department. He will start his new position in July.
"Kurt will bring a depth of knowledge and aviation experience to this position," said Dennis Kuhlman, dean of K-State at Salina. "We are certain that he'll be instrumental in taking K-State aviation to the next level."
Barnhart has been acting chair of Indiana State University's aerospace technology department, where he also has served in a teaching capacity since 1996. He has been a National Association of Flight Instructors' Master Flight Instructor since 2003 and brings industrial experience from Allison Engine Co. -- now Rolls Royce -- and American Trans Air.
"My decision to come to K-State at Salina was motivated by the high quality of the program, the commitment to excellence evident in the faculty, and the great future potential of the department," Barnhart said. "My vision for this department is for us to continue its climb toward preeminence among aviation departments in the nation."
Barnhart has a bachelor's degree in aviation administration from Purdue University, a master's in business administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a doctorate in educational administration from Indiana State University. He also has several notable flight and mechanic ratings, has received KA B200 and Citation II advanced training from Flight Safety International, and has completed the Federal Aviation Administration accident investigation course.
Barnhart developed the first online renewal course for FAA inspection authorization mechanics with Gleim Publications. He has received Indiana State University's Fred Swalls Award in Educational Administration and Leland D. Melvin Award in Education. He also is active in the University Aviation Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the National Association of Flight Instructors.
Barnhart is replacing Marlon Johnston, who is returning to teaching full time after serving as aviation department head at K-State at Salina for six years.
