MAES IS NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF CONTINUING EDUCATION

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University has appointed Sue C. Maes, an expert on building new academic programs and fostering institutional collaboration, to be interim dean of the Division of Continuing Education. She will take up her new duties July 1.

Maes comes to the job from K-State's Educational Communications Center, where she has been senior development officer since 1995. Her other duties include a graduate faculty appointment in the College of Education and her role as co-director of the Institute for Academic Alliances.

"Sue Maes' long and effective leadership and unique experiences at K-State give her the background which will serve her well in this position," said Duane Nellis, provost and senior vice president. "I'm confident she'll do an excellent job in this interim role."

Maes earned her doctorate in counseling and educational psychology in 1998 from K-State, where her emphasis was on higher education administration.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, and I appreciate the confidence the provost has shown in me," Maes said. "I understand the importance of extending the service of the Division of Continuing Education to Kansas State University and the community.

"I look forward to working with the division's professional staff to ensure that K-State plays a critical role in improving the state's work force, and in securing investment in those workers.

"In addition, the demands of globalization will require the division to advance related curricular programs."

Continuing education will be familiar territory for Maes: She was the division's assistant dean and director of academic outreach in 1994-95, and for many years she was in charge of planning and resource development.

From 1998 to 1999, Maes was president of the University Continuing Education Association, and in 2000 she was elected to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. For the past several years she has helped develop the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance. Maes is also skilled in project management and external funding acquisition.

In addition to her administrative abilities, Maes has demonstrated a decades-long commitment to advancing rural education and community development. She was a co-founder of the Rural Clearinghouse for Lifelong Education and Development in 1984, and she helped design the Kansas Center for Rural Initiatives.
