SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SUMMER WORKSHOP AVAILABLE AT K-STATE FOR GIRLS IN 8TH AND 9TH GRADES

MANHATTAN -- Four days of engineering, math and science exploration is the agenda planned for eighth- and ninth-grade girls July 16-19 at Kansas State University.

The fifth annual EXCITE! — EXploring sCIence, Technology and Engineering — Workshop will feature hands-on activities led by K-State faculty, as well as industry tours geared toward the seven workshop tracts of aeronautics, auto design, nanoscale polymers, robotics, water power, building design and construction and Web design.

The EXCITE! Program is sponsored by K-State's Women in Engineering and Science Program, which receives industry support from Dow Chemical Company and P&G. Companies hosting workshop participants for industry tours this year are Spirit Aero Systems, Script Pro, General Motors, Midwest Research Institute, NanoScale, Perceptive Software, Cerner, Latimer, Sommers & Associates and PKMR.

The workshop registration fee is $200, which includes room and board, materials and a T-shirt. A limited number of financial scholarships are available.

Teachers from across the state also can participate in a graduate course, Integrating Engineering in the Classroom, offered in conjunction with the EXCITE! Workshop. Presented by Jacqueline Spears, associate professor of secondary education at K-State, the class will include discussion and instruction on gender issues affecting science and math education.
