WASHINGTON, D.C., AEROSPACE FLIGHT ACADEMY BRINGING 50 INNER-CITY STUDENTS TO K-STATE AT SALINA TO EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF FLIGHT

SALINA -- Fifty high school students from inner-city neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., are coming to Kansas State University at Salina to learn firsthand about the power of flight.

Students attending the Washington, D.C., Aerospace Flight Academy Camp will arrive in Salina Monday, July 30. For two weeks, the students will learn to fly K-State at Salina's planes, go to ground school and find out what it takes to maintain a modern fleet of aircraft.

"These students will have two weeks of targeted exposure to aviation at a time in their lives when most students aren't lucky enough to have that opportunity," said Kurt Barnhart, head of the department of aviation at K-State at Salina. "If aviation piques their interest, perhaps a few of them will want to pursue it as a career."

The camp is for students who are already interested in aviation. It exposes them to a variety of aviation careers, including piloting, air traffic control, aircraft mechanics, manufacturing and airport operations.

While at K-State at Salina, the students will live in the residence halls, tour the Salina Airport Authority and make a field trip to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.

K-State at Salina's aviation program offers piloting, aviation maintenance, aviation safety and glider training. Later this fall, helicopter training also will be available.
