K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS NAMES WINNERS OF ANNUAL S. THOMAS PARKER MATHEMATICAL COMPETITION
MANHATTAN -- Winners have been selected in 10th annual S. Thomas Parker Mathematics Competition at Kansas State University.
The competition, conducted April 12, is part of a nationwide activity for Mathematics Month and encourages K-State students to strengthen their mathematical skills and promote mathematics education.
The competition is open to all full-time K-State students who are in their first two years of college. Participants are given three hours to solve four problems in mathematics, ranging from the high school level early collegiate level. Cash prizes of $300 for first, $200 for second, $100 for first and $20 for honorable mention are awarded. Winners also receive a certificate to keep and a framed certificate to be posted in the student organization of choice to recognize the accomplishment.
The competition is supported by the S. Thomas Parker endowment and the K-State Math Club.

Jeffrey Hicks, junior in mechanical engineering and mathematics, Emporia, honorable mention; Brian Tierney, sophomore in electrical engineering, Independence, honorable mention; Rebeka Scott, freshman in mathematics, Lenexa, honorable mention; Rui Zhou, junior in electrical engineering and mathematics, first place, and Huifeng Yu, freshman in chemical engineering, second place, both of Manhattan; Lisa Taylor, junior in mathematics and economics, Oakley, honorable mention; Kevin Arpin, sophomore in mechanical engineering, Randolph, third place; and Ray Scheufler, freshman in computer engineering, Sterling, honorable mention.
