KANSAS COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN NAMES K-STATE SENIOR FROM OLATHE AS COUNCIL'S OUTSTANDING STUDENT MEMBER OF THE YEAR

MANHATTAN -- Aimee Klimek, a senior in secondary education at Kansas State University, is this year's Outstanding Student Council for Exceptional Children Member of the Year for the state of Kansas.

Klimek, Olathe, will be honored Saturday, Oct. 27, at the annual conference of the Kansas Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children in Hutchinson.

The award recognizes a current student member of the council who has contributed a great deal of time, energy and support to the council and to exceptional children.

Klimek is a co-founder of K-State's Student Council for Exceptional Children chapter. She also served as its first president during the past year.

Support for her nomination was strong, according to Robb Scott, vice president of the Kansas Council for Exceptional Children.

"Her adviser described her as a hard worker who is now getting freshmen and sophomores involved to keep the chapter running after she graduates," he said.

"There are 64,000 children in Kansas public schools who receive federally funded special education services," Scott said. "These exceptional learners -- and new teachers like Aimee Klimek who work to support their success -- deserve our undivided attention throughout the year. The 370 members of the Kansas Council for Exceptional Children hope this award helps to raise awareness across the state and motivates communities to express their gratitude to people like Aimee."

Klimek is a 2004 graduate of Olathe East High School.

The Kansas Council for Exceptional Children is the Kansas affiliate of the Council for Exceptional Children, a national and international organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. More information on the Kansas council is available by contacting Scott at 785-395-5373 or 785-532-7660. More information also is available online at http://www.kansascec.org
