SUCCESS IN GAINING SCHOLARSHIPS FOCUS OF K-STATE WORKSHOP
MANHATTAN -- Success in attaining scholarships is the focus of a Kansas State University EXCITE! for ninth- and 10th-grade girls, Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Clarion Hotel in Manhattan. EXCITE! stands for EXploring sCIence, Technology and Engineering.
"Show Me the Scholarships!" will feature workshop topics that include application information, resume building, interview techniques and understanding financial aid. Each interactive session will be 30 minutes and led by K-State staff and students who have been successful in receiving scholarships.
Registration will begin at 8:20 a.m., with the first session at 9 a.m. and the final session ending at 2 p.m. The workshop's $10 fee includes a small group lunch setting led by a female mentor currently enrolled in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics major at K-State. Campus tours are optional following the workshop.
"Parents and teachers are welcome to attend with their daughters/students," said Susan Arnold Christian, outreach program coordinator for the Women in Engineering and Science Program at K-State. "Ben Kohl, assistant director of K-State student financial assistance, will be the host of one session specifically for parents and teachers. The rest of the day, they will be free to select the sessions of their choice, just like the girls."
To register, contact Christian at 785-532-6152 or susanac@k-state.edu no later than Tuesday, Oct. 30. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, but there will be a waiting list once the event is full, and substitutions will be made if cancellations occur. Need-based scholarships are also available.
EXCITE! is for young women to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields and to prepare for college through a year-round program that offers ninth- through 12th-graders opportunities on and off the K-State campus. EXCITE! is sponsored by the Women in Engineering and Science Program at K-State.
