FOUR K-STATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS EARN HONORS IN BAYER STONE COMPETITION
MANHATTAN -- Several Kansas State University architecture students received honors in the recent Bayer Stone Competition and for a video project related to the competition.
The Bayer Stone Competition is offered through the K-State department of architecture and is sponsored by Bayer Stone in St. Mary's.
This year's competition asked students to design a small, theoretical limestone plaza for the K-State campus. The project, "The Plaza of the Consummate Pedagogue," was to honor teachers and the tradition of academic excellence, as evidenced by the number of Rhodes, Marshall and Truman scholars from K-State.
While they were working on the two-week studio project, all second-year architecture students spent a day working with masons and building a stone wall at Pottorf Hall in Manhattan's CiCo Park.
Each of four studios selected two projects to be considered for awards. Architecture studio faculty included Robert Condia, Miriam Neet, Susanne Siepl-Coates and Don Watts.
Competition jurors included Matthew Knox, associate professor of architecture at K-State; Jeff Chaffee, Master Landscape Inc., Manhattan; and David Reed, David Reed Landscape Architects, San Diego, Calif.
Related to the competition, fifth-year architecture students in Knox's studio used the project as the subject of videos they developed by working in teams. The winning team, received a "Racso," which is Oscar spelled backward.
At the end of the project, the competition entries were displayed, videos viewed and prizewinners announced at a reception sponsored for the students and faculty by Bayer Stone.
Students earning honors included:
Jesse Hussman, second-year architecture student, Plainville, second place and $500 in the Bayer Stone Competition; and Jill Maurer, second-year architecture student, Topeka, first place and $1,000 in the Bayer Stone Competition.
From out of state:
Jamie Hayes, graduate student in architecture, Colorado Springs, Colo., Racso team video award; Jason Rivera, second-year architecture student, Vero Beach, Fla., third place and $100.
