DIRECTOR OF K-STATE'S VETERINARY DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY TO SERVE AS VICE PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION OF VETERINARY LABORATORY DIAGNOSTICIANS

MANHATTAN -- Dr. Gary Anderson, director of the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, was recently elected vice president of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

The election is a four-year commitment to serve on the association's executive committee, with culmination in the office of the president. Anderson's responsibilities with the association coincide closely with many of his duties at the diagnostic laboratory, where he sets policies and procedures consistent with the association's accreditation requirements.

The full-service K-State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine, serves veterinarians and animal owners in the state and world. It also provides strong support for the teaching and research responsibilities of the department of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology, the College of Veterinary Medicine and K-State.

"I consider selection for this position to be both an honor and an opportunity," Anderson said. "It will provide an opportunity for me to enhance K-State's representation and involvement in the National Animal Health Network. This network will lead future diagnostic and surveillance successes for foreign animal diseases, food safety and agro/bioterrorism threats in the U.S. I'm very pleased to represent K-State, to serve our profession and fellow diagnosticians, and to participate in many of the positive developments presently occurring in diagnostics, public health and veterinary medicine here and around the world."

"Our congratulations go out to Dr. Anderson," said Dr. Ralph Richardson, dean of the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. "He will do an excellent job with the association. He joins a long list of K-State veterinary professionals who have become nationally recognized as leaders and innovators."

Anderson earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology from South Dakota State University; a doctor of veterinary medicine and master's degree in pathology from K-State; and a doctorate in comparative pathology at the University of California-Davis.

He has been a professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology and director of the diagnostic lab since 2005. Anderson is also on the Dean's Administrative Council for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians is a not-for-profit professional organization that disseminates information relating to the diagnosis of animal diseases; coordinates diagnostic activities of regulatory, research and service laboratories; establishes, improves and develops new and existing diagnostic techniques; establishes guidelines for the improvement of diagnostic laboratory organizations; and acts as a consultant to the United States Animal Health Association on uniform diagnostic criteria involved in regulatory animal disease programs.
