K-STATE
DEBATE TEAM EXCELS IN RECENT COMPETITIONS
MANHATTAN
-- The debate team from Kansas State University has received top
awards at its first three competitions this year, a success that
can be attributed to senior leadership, according to Justin Green,
director of debate.
"This
start represents the best start of the Kansas State debate program
in over a decade," Green said. "Currently ranked No. 6
in the country, we have already amassed more first-place trophies
than in the past two years combined."
The
K-State debate team has participated in competitions at the University
of Northern Iowa, Sept. 16-18; Wichita State University, Sept. 22-24;
and at Missouri State University, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
K-State
debate team members who have won awards in the recent competitions
include:
Michelle
Layne, senior in speech education, Abilene, first place, junior
varsity team division, Wichita State University; Kara Thiele, sophomore
in speech, Coffeyville, fourth place, speaker junior varsity division,
Wichita State University; Jordan Hanson, freshman in philosophy,
Hutchinson, first place overall, junior varsity team division, University
of Northern Iowa; Drew Cummings, junior in political science, Lawrence,
third place, novice team division, Missouri State University, and
second place, novice speaker division, and first place, novice team
division, both at Wichita State University; Dan Stout, senior in
speech, Manhattan, second place, varsity team division, Missouri
State University.
From
Olathe: Beth Mendenhall, freshman in philosophy, first place, speaker
junior varsity division, and first place overall, junior varsity
team division, both at the University of Northern Iowa; and Kyle
Zarazan, junior in computer science, second place, varsity team
division, Missouri State University.
Kathryn
Price, freshman in art, St. George, third place, novice team division,
Missouri State University, and third place, speaker novice division,
and first place, novice team division, both at Wichita State University;
and David Cohen, senior in management, Topeka, first place, junior
varsity team division, Wichita State University.
