ROBERT J. SAWYER TO SPEAK AT K-STATE LIBRARIES
MANHATTAN -- Robert J. Sawyer, an internationally-acclaimed, award-winning science fiction author and futurist, will speak at Kansas State University's Hale Library at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Sawyer, a winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, is the keynote speaker for the dedication of K-State's David J. Williams III Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Collection. He will present "Science Fiction as a Mirror for Reality" in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. A book signing and reception will follow the presentation.
The Williams Collection was acquired by K-State Libraries' Morse Department of Special Collections in 2006, and has more than 3,000 volumes of books and magazines -- many of them signed or rare -- dating from the early 20th century through 2001, when Williams died.
More than 100 items from the Williams Collection are currently part of the exhibit "Not of This World!" in Hale Library's fifth-floor gallery. Included in the exhibit are manuscript letters and a typescript page from horror writer H.P. Lovecraft's first published book, "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" in 1936. It was his only published work outside of periodicals during his lifetime.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome Mr. Sawyer to K-State Libraries for the Williams Collection dedication," said Roger Adams, associate professor and rare books librarian. "His books are wonderful, and he is an incredibly intelligent, enthusiastic and dynamic speaker. This is definitely an event not to be missed."
