CONCERTS, PLAYS AND STUDENT-MADE GIFTS RING IN HOLIDAYS AT K-STATE

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University is helping spread the spirit of the holidays with musical performances, films and gift ideas from Wildcat country.

Gifts from K-State include:

* Poinsettias grown at Throckmorton Hall greenhouses by K-State students and employees from Manhattan's Big Lakes Developmental Center. Varieties for sale include Freedom red; Peterstar red, pink or white; Prestige dark red, red Winter Rose (incurved bracts); and Sonora (multicolored red and white bracts). The poinsettias are grown in 6.5-inch pots and are $7 per plant with sales tax included. For an extra dollar, pots will be wrapped in foil and delivered on campus. Supplies are limited; to order or for more information, contact 785-532-1420 or mattson@k-state.edu.

* The Friends of K-State Libraries "Better Books Bazaar" will offer new and "gently read" gift books, histories, autobiographies, fiction, children's books and more. The bazaar will be 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 26 and 27 on the second floor of Hale Library. A sneak preview will be possible during set-up from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25. The Friends also will sell chances to a drawing for a quilt made by the Scholarly Stitchers.

* Rings and other student-made jewelry will be sold by the Metalsmithing Society from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 29 and 30 in the K-State Student Union.

* K-State's Potters Guild will sell ceramics made by students from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 3-5 in the Union.

* Products from K-State's meat lab include hickory-smoked whole turkey, hickory-smoked boneless ham, summer sausage, Lebanon-style bologna and gift boxes of sausage and cheese. Orders are due by Monday, Dec. 3. Items must be picked up at the Call Hall dairy bar Dec. 5-19. Payment should be made when order is picked up. The dairy bar is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. To place orders or for more information, call 785-532-1292, or fax orders to 785-532-5681. Holiday-themed performances and activities at K-State include:

* Holiday Festival of Music by the University Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Ave. The performances feature the K-State Choir and Chorale, Rhapsody Ringers and K-State's Brass Ensemble.

* The musical "Babes In Toyland" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, McCain Auditorium. Set at the end of the 19th century, this classic weaves fantasy and reality for the entire family: 11-year-old Lisa is too busy taking care of her siblings and cooking to bother with toys. But during a Christmas Eve blizzard, Lisa travels to a fantasy world where she must thwart a plan to take over Toyland. * Annual Holiday Family Art Workshop, 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at K-State's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. Cost is $3 per participant or half-price for Beach Buddies. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are not required. For more information, call 785-532-7718.

* Christmas concert by the K-State Singers and K-State men's and women's glee clubs at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in All Faiths Chapel. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students, military and senior citizens.

* Christmas concert by the K-State Orchestra and Choir with the K-State dance program, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in McCain Auditorium. Admission is free but there is a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $2 for students.

* Bluemont Buffet from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Bluemont Room and Ballroom at the Union. Cost is $8.25. To make reservations, call 785-532-6068.

* "The Muppets Christmas Carol," a retelling of the classic Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, showing Dec. 7-9 at the Union's Little Theater. The 1992 film runs 86 minutes. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7; 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8; and 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Admission is $1. For more information, visit http://www.k-state.edu/upc/

* The 1st Infantry Division Band holiday concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets are free and may be picked up at the auditorium.
