K-STATE ENGINEERING PROFESSOR NAMED TO NATIONAL COMMITTEE
MANHATTAN -- Brian A. Coon, associate professor of civil engineering at Kansas State University, has been appointed to the Committee on Tort Liability and Risk Management, AL070, by the Transportation Research Board Executive Committee.
The Transportation Research Board is a division of the National Research Council, a private nonprofit institution that provides expertise in science and technology to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities. The council is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.
The Committee on Tort Liability and Risk Management fills needs of the states for research, education and training in the areas of tort liability and the administration of risk management. Its membership is composed of attorneys, engineers and administrators concerned with liability and risk management who provide useful insight and act as liaison to other safety-conscious committees within the Transportation Research Board.
Coon is director of the University Transportation Center, which coordinates interdisciplinary transportation research, training and outreach efforts at K-State. Focusing on the sustainability and safety of rural transportation systems and infrastructure, the center emphasizes the unique needs of rural transportation systems. Coon earned his doctorate in engineering and his law degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A Kansas attorney, Coon joined the College of Engineering faculty at K-State in 2006.
