K-STATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN COMPETITIONS, WIN AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL MEETING

MANHATTAN -- Students from the department of biological and agricultural engineering at Kansas State University took  presented papers and posters, competed in club contests and participated in robotics and fountain war competitions at the annual international meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, June 17-20, in Minneapolis, Minn.

K-State's undergraduate student branch of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and the Agricultural Technology Management club each won first place in the 2007 Association of Equipment Manufacturers student club report and activities competition.

In the team competitions, the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Fountain Wars Design Team placed second in the fountain wars competition and was awarded "best use of electronics." The Biological and Agricultural Engineering Robotics Team won the meeting's first ever robotics competition, finishing first out of five teams participating. Teams were judged on system performance, a written report and oral presentation.

Students participating in the meeting, all biological and agricultural engineering majors unless otherwise noted, and their activity included:

Brett O'Connor, junior, Altamont, fountain wars team; Michael Anderson, sophomore, Jamestown, fountain wars team; Justine Sullivan, sophomore, Lakin, fountain wars team; Jennifer Fund, senior, Lenexa, fountain wars team and presented the poster "Sustainable Stormwater Design in the Midwest."

From Manhattan: Michael Adams, sophomore in agricultural technology management, robotics team; Laura Christianson, graduate student, second place in the graduate student research competition for her poster presentation "Management Implications for a Polar Phytoremediation Plantation" and she received an American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Presidential Distinguished Service Award for assisting in the development and coordination of the multimedia competition for high school students.

From Manhattan, continued: Alicia Greene, senior, presented the poster "Sustainable Stormwater Design in the Midwest"; Wei Han, graduate student, robotics team; Peng Li, graduate student, robotics team; Andy Massing, senior in agricultural education, robotics team; and Anthony Mignano, senior, fountain wars team.

Rebecca Burns, junior, Mayetta, fountain wars team; Lucas Maddy, May 2007 bachelor's graduate in agricultural technology management, Norton, received the 2007 Robert E. Stewart Engineering-Humanities Award in recognition of his accomplishments and interests to advance the interaction between the profession and the humanities; Daniel Berges, May 2007 bachelor's graduate in biological and agricultural engineering, Onaga, robotics team; Matt Brooks, senior, Overland Park, robotics team; Keith Corpstein, junior, agricultural technology management, Tipton, fountain wars team; Chris Robare, May 2007 bachelor's graduate in biological and agricultural engineering, Topeka, fountain wars team; Rykki Belt, senior, Ulysses, fountain wars team; Conrad Reichart, senior, agricultural technology management, Valley Falls, fountain wars team; and Megan Epler, junior, Yates Center, fountain wars team.
