K-STATE PROFESSOR, STUDENT WIN COMMERCE BANK AWARDS FOR DIVERSITY EFFORTS
MANHATTAN -- Their work in the cause of diversity at Kansas State University has won an architecture student and an associate professor of family studies and human services Commerce Bank Presidential Awards.
Farrell Webb has been named the winner of the Commerce Bank Presidential Faculty/Staff Award for Distinguished Services to Historically Under-represented Students. The award was established in 1978 to recognize outstanding individual contributions to the development of high-quality education for students of color at K-State. It comes with a $2,500 prize.
The 2007 recipient of the Commerce Presidential Award for Enhancing Multiculturalism is Clemente Jaquez-Herrera, a fifth-year architecture student, Garden City. The award, first given in 1997, recognizes outstanding individual contributions to diversity within the student sector. He will receive $500.
The two will be honored at a reception from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the K-State Alumni Center.
"Dr. Webb's thorough grounding in statistics and metrics, as well as theory and methods, have helped countless Ph.D. students of color finish their dissertations and graduate as scholars and teachers into the academy, which even today is still a closed society for many multicultural students," read one letter nominating Webb for the recognition.
A recommendation letter for Jaquez-Herrera praised him for balancing his pursuits "in architecture, his studies and his need to be involved in the community around him, something that is driven by his social consciousness."
