K-STATE PLANS PANEL DISCUSSION UPDATING CAMPUS ON SAFETY PROCEDURES, NOTIFICATIONS, IN WAKE OF NIU TRAGEDY

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's office of student life is reaching out to students who have transferred to K-State from Northern Illinois University, or who are from Illinois.

Heather Reed, assistant dean of student life, said her office is letting students know that counselors are available to anyone who needs assistance dealing with the tragedy yesterday at NIU.

A panel discussion and update session is scheduled for noon Monday, Feb. 18, in the K-State Student Union Big 12 Room. "Safety Update to the K-State Campus in Response to the NIU Tragedy" is sponsored by the K-State crisis management committee.

Students, faculty and staff will have an opportunity to hear from student life and campus safety professionals about recent updates and improvements to procedures in place at K-State, and to ask questions. Pat Bosco, dean of student life and associate vice president for institutional advancement, will be the moderator. Panelists include Fred Newton, director of counseling services; Derek Jackson, associate director of housing and dining services; Heather Reed, assistant dean of student life; Capt. Richard Herrman, patrol/operations, K-State police; and Cheryl May, assistant vice president for university relations.

A poster will be available in the K-State Student Union for anyone to sign to express condolences to those at  Northern Illinois University. The poster will be available in the Union next week and then will be sent to NIU.
