MANHATTAN -- A Kansas State University senior in architectural engineering has received a $10,000 scholarship from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

James Newman, Hoxie, was selected for the Willis H. Carrier Scholarship for his outstanding scholastic and leadership abilities, character and potential service to the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration profession. The selection was made by the society's scholarship trustees.

The one-year scholarship is to assist top students in pursuing a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering. It can be used for tuition and fees required for enrollment, including books, supplies and equipment.

Newman is a member of K-State's student chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, as well as the Architectural Engineering Institute and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. He also is involved with St. Isadore's Student Center.

After graduating from K-State, Newman said he wants to work for an engineering consulting firm and would like to specialize in building energy analysis and LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environment Design. He also plans to pursue certification as a professional engineer.

Newman is the son of Gary and Betty Newman and a 2004 graduate of Hoxie High School.
