Hamlisch's first attempt at writing a Broadway musical, "A Chorus Line," opened in May 1975 and became the most successful musical of the decade, winning multiple awards and running into the 1990s. He has worked with Aretha Franklin, Peter Allen and the Carpenters. He wrote the song "Nobody Does It Better," which became a hit for vocalist Carly Simon.

He received the Academy Award for his work for the films "The Way We Were" and "The Sting," and was nominated for his music for the films "Sophie's Choice," "Ice Castles," "Same Time Next Year" and "Shirley Valentine."
