K-STATE KINESIOLOGIST NAMED FELLOW OF RESEARCH GROUP

MANHATTAN -- Timothy K. Behrens, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Kansas State University, is among nine candidates who will be inducted as Research Consortium Fellows at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention April 10 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Behrens will join about 375 fellows in the consortium, which is a group of more than 5,500 alliance members who have a strong interest in research.

Fellow status is one of the most prestigious honors the research consortium can bestow on a member. Fellows are selected for their scholarship, including research presentations and publications.

"Fellows demonstrate an ongoing commitment to research and a high level of achievement in their field," said the group's president, Ellen Staurowsky of Ithaca College. "Members of our 2008 class are to be congratulated for this recognition of their scholarship."

The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, based in Reston, Va., is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion and education.

The alliance consists of five national associations, six district associations and the Research Consortium. Its goal is to provide an array of resources, support and programs to help practitioners improve skills and further the health and well-being of the American public. The mission of the alliance's Research Consortium is to promote and disseminate high-quality research across the disciplines and professions served by the alliance. A certified health education specialist, his research interests include physical activity measurement issues and program planning and evaluation. He is the author of several peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at professional conferences across the nation.

Behrens is a member of the American college of Sports Medicine, International Physical Activity and the Environment Network and the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance. He earned a bachelor's degree in community health from Sam Houston State University, a master's in health education from the University of Houston and a doctorate in health promotion from the University of Oklahoma.
