NEW GUIDE IDENTIFIES K-STATE AS ONE OF NATION'S 'CUTTING-EDGE SCHOOLS'

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University is one of the "25 cutting-edge schools in the nation," according to the 2008 edition of Kaplan Publishing's guide, "You Are Here: A Guide to Over 380 Colleges & Unlimited Paths to Your Future."

K-State was selected as a cutting-edge school because it offers programs in many of the "50 hottest career choices," as identified by the guide through surveys conducted with prospective undergraduates across the country.

K-State was the only school in Kansas and the only school from the Big 12 Conference identified as a cutting-edge school in the guide. Other schools on the list include the University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, George Washington University, University of Tennessee, University of California-Irvine, U.S. Air Force Academy and Loyola Marymount University.

"Being named among the nation's most cutting-edge schools shows the quality and depth of K-State's 250 majors and career options," said Pat Bosco, associate vice president for institutional advancement and dean of student life. "It also shows that K-State offers programs in career fields today's students most want, such as aviation, architecture, engineering, computers, finance, chemistry, veterinary medicine, journalism, accounting, physics, education, anthropology, the biosciences and many others."

The guide, which will be released in September, is for high school students seeking both a career path and a college. Along with identifying the hottest career choices, it also includes interviews with people who work in those careers, as well as information on areas of specialty, educational requirements, salary and more.

The Kaplan guide is not the only one to single out K-State for excellence. Earlier this year, the university was named among the best values in U.S. colleges and universities by two other guides, the Princeton Review and the Kiplinger 100. Both lists focus on academic and financial value.

K-State ranks No. 1 among public colleges and universities in the number of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholars since 1986, and is the only public university in the top 10 in these scholarships among all U.S. schools, both public and private.

In addition, funding for scholarships at K-State continues to increase. The university awarded $9 million in scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year, an increase of about $2 million from 2005-2006.
