K-STATE CHEER SQUAD TO COMPETE IN 2008 COLLEGE CHEERLEADING NATIONALS

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University cheerleading squad will compete at the 2008 College Cheerleading Nationals. It's the third straight year the squad will participate in the competition.

K-State won a paid bid to the nationals by taking top honors in a recent National Cheerleaders Association summer camp. The K-State squad won both competitions at the camp: game day and rally routine. The squad also was voted the most spirited.

In addition, four K-State cheerleaders were named to the All-America Cheerleading Team: Kelsey Fechter, freshman in premedicine, and Ashley Smith, junior in marketing, both of Overland Park; Kayla Chrisman, freshman in pre-journalism and mass communications, Wichita; and Jodie Mayes, sophomore in arts and sciences-open option, Fayetteville, Ark.

Nineteen college cheer squads competed at the camp, which was held at K-State in early August. K-State was one of only two squads at the camp that earned a paid bid to the College Cheerleading Nationals, which will be in April 2008 in Daytona Beach, Fla. K-State placed seventh at the event in 2006 and was eighth in 2007.
