Asking 18 and 19-year-old college students what career they're
preparing for isn't a question Michael Holen, dean of College
of Education, tends to ask. Instead, Holen encourages students
to pursue academic programs to provide them a range of intellectual
experiences well beyond what they would need in any specific job.
Holen, who came to K-State in 1971, served as a professor, department head and associate dean before being named dean of education in 1991.
In 1988, Holen received the Presidential Award for Distinguished Service to Minority Education after helping many predominantly black universities develop academic programs and administrative systems. He has twice chaired the Regents' Council of Education Deans and serves as K-State's Faculty Athletics Representative to the Big 12 Conference.
Holen earned his bachelor's degree in history and literature from Stanford University and his master's and doctorate degrees in educational psychology, both from the University of Oregon.
Holen can be contacted at 785-532-5525 or via e-mail at mholen@k-state.edu.
