When George W. Bush was sworn in as president he wasn't the only
family member returning to the White House. He was joined by Spot
Fletcher Bush, an English springer spaniel who is the daughter
of former President George Bush's dog, Millie.
And while more than 400 animals have occupied the White House, the Bush animal connection is a historical first, according to Ronnie G. Elmore, associate dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. Elmore is an expert on presidential pets and writes a nationally syndicated column, "Points on Pets."
Elmore received a bachelor of arts degree from Greenville College, a bachelor of science degree and D.V.M. from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and his master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
