Michael (Mike) Boland
Professor, agricultural economics
Associate director, Arthur Capper Cooperative Center

 

Mike BolandMichael (Mike) Boland, professor of agricultural economics and associate director of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center at Kansas State University, has teaching, research and continuing education responsibilities in strategy and agribusiness management. Boland has taught or lectured in more than 20 countries and co-authored more than 30 case studies on food businesses and agribusinesses. He has led student study tours in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Honduras, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Boland teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in strategy, including one distance education course in the agribusiness graduate degree program, which is taught through the Internet. He has received numerous national, university and college teaching awards. Boland was co-chair of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commission on Food and Agribusiness Management Education, which released its report in December 2006.

Boland received his doctorate in agricultural economics from Purdue University specializing in marketing, production and strategic management. He also has a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Purdue and a master's degree in agricultural education from the University of Minnesota, where he specialized in extension and continuing education. Boland received his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.

Prior to arriving at K-State as an assistant professor in 1996, Boland was the recipient of a United States Department of Agriculture National Needs Ph.D Fellowship in agribusiness, where he helped work with continuing education programs in the Purdue University Center for Food and Agricultural Business. Boland's previous work experience includes a local farm supply cooperative and a cooperative trade association. He is the oldest of 12 children and was reared in Minnesota.
