ANNUAL SECURITY REPORTEach year, the last issue in September of the faculty/staff newsletter is addressed to every person employed by K-State. This is to remind employees that as of Oct. 1 the annual security report will be available. In compliance with the Higher Education Amendments of 1965, as amended, K-State prepares and distributes an annual security report that contains important information concerning reports of crime on campus, crime prevention and other policy statements as required by law. A copy of the annual security report will be available Oct. 1 by contacting the dean of student life office or by visiting http://k-state.edu/ DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION RECEIVES APPRECIATION CERTIFICATEFort Riley management employees recently presented K-State's Division of Continuing Education with a certificate of appreciation for offering a series of seminars on leadership and change management to Fort Riley civilian employees. Continuing education worked with Fort Riley staff and K-State faculty to plan and develop the Fort Riley Garrison Professional Development Seminar Series. The monthly seminars were offered from April through August to coincide with changes in civilian personnel management by the Army. The seminars focused on leadership and change, mid-year appraisals, conflict management, good communication and change in management. David Stewart, assistant dean of continuing education, accepted the certificate on behalf of K-State. The certificate was presented by Col. Richard Piscal, garrison commander. OH, BY THE WAY...RETIREMENT AID COUNSELING To assist faculty in planning for retirement, Orlan Buller, former faculty member in the department of agricultural economics, has been appointed to a part-time position. Buller is available to provide individual retirement counseling during the fall and spring semesters, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons or by appointment. EMPLOYEE BENEFITS FAIR OCT. 4 Human resources also is hosting the 2007 Benefits Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Main Ballroom of the K-State Student Union. Representatives from various benefit programs will be available to answer questions about their plans. The Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS), the Kansas Board of Regents basic retirement plan companies, and various voluntary tax-sheltered annuity and deferred compensation providers will be represented. Health, dental, pharmaceutical and vision insurance providers will be represented, as will numerous campus activities and community organizations. Human resources also has arranged for a representative from the state of Kansas Health Policy Authority to conduct two identical meetings on health insurance and the KanElect flexible spending plan. The first meeting, at 9 a.m., will be in Forum Hall, K-State Student Union. The second, at 3 p.m., will be in the Little Theater, K-State Student Union. Each meeting will outline programs for health, dental, pharmaceutical and vision insurance, health savings accounts and KanElect. Open enrollment will take place via the Internet Oct. 1-31. Chris Banner may appear to be at the beck and call of every student with a seized trombone slide or a missing clarinet swab, but being indispensable suits him just fine. Bernard King, associate professor of aviation at K-State at Salina, has earned Master Certificated Flight Instructor accreditation for the fourth time from the National Association of Flight Instructors. King has held the professional accreditation continuously since 2001. He is one of only 14 Kansas aviation educators who has earned the master instructor designation -- awarded only to the top instructors in the country, according to the National Association of Flight Instructors. K-State at Salina has five of the 14 master flight instructors.
Dan W. Donelin has been inducted into the Academy of Fellows of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. Donelin is a professor and head of the department of landscape architecture and regional and community planning in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. The recognition was announced at the council's annual conference in August at Pennsylvania State University. Donelin has had a distinguished career in support of the council, which he has served as first vice president and president. He also has been vice president of education for American Society of Landscape Architects, in which he is a fellow. He was chair of the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board from 1992-95. Donelin also is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Landscape architecture students at K-State's College of Architecture, Planning and Design have chosen Stephanie A. Rolley as their 2007-2008 teacher of the year. Professors are nominated and selected by landscape architecture students. Rolley's work centers on interdisciplinary teaching through community-based collaborations that advance the public recognition of the profession. She involves students in working with leaders and representatives from communities to help them shape the future of their towns and regions.
Robert Stokes, professor of civil engineering at K-State, has been elected director of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Region Seven. Stokes will begin a four-year term in November. He also will serve as appointed member to the national finance and program committees. Stokes has served as faculty adviser or co-adviser of the student chapter of the K-State American Society of Civil Engineers for seven years. He previously served as president of the Kansas section of the society and currently represents the Kansas and Kansas City sections on the regional board of governors.
POINTS OF PRIDERodeo raises money for cancer research Cowboys and cowgirls showed the power of pink this summer by raising more than $5,000 for K-State's Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research. The Kaw Valley PRCA Rodeo sponsored a "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" night July 27 at the Riley County Fair as a fundraiser, and contestants as well as spectators pitched in to make the event a success. "Cowboys are tough, but the toughest heroes are the men and women who fight cancer," said Char Henton, Kaw Valley Rodeo Association member. "The rodeo community is a caring bunch and we wanted to dedicate one night of our rodeo to something bigger." |
