FALL RALLY FOR K-STATE'S CAMPAIGN FOR NONVIOLENCE VIOLENCE SEPT. 7

MANHATTAN -- The fifth annual campus and community Rally for Nonviolence at Kansas State University will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the K-State Student Union Courtyard. The rally is free and the public is welcome.

In conjunction with the rally, a free outdoor film and discussion series, "Movies on the Grass," is being launched and will highlight social justice and human rights themes. The series also includes a raffle to win a student international travel grant.

"We hope to energize the campus community and start the school year with a positive, grassroots push toward nonviolence and safety," said Dorinda Lambert, director for clinical services at university counseling services and chair of the K-State Campaign for Nonviolence.

The rally will include information tables and displays by progressive social change and wellness organizations. A brief awards ceremony will be at noon to recognize campus and community members who have helped the nonviolence movement in a significant way.

"Student and community groups with a focus on wellness, nonviolence, peace and related missions have an opportunity at the rally to provide information, to recruit new members and to offer resources for receiving help," said Susan Allen, director of the K-State Women's Center and a founding member of the Campaign for Nonviolence.

The "Movies on the Grass" film series, which add a global dimension to the rally this year, will be shown on a large screen at Coffman Commons near the south side of Hale Library. Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair of blanket and join the fun, Allen said.

The first film, "Hotel Rwanda," will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Sunday Sept. 11. Films will follow each successive Sunday evening throughout September and part of October. The rain location for the series will be Hale Library's Hemisphere Room

"Movies on the Grass" is sponsored by K-State Libraries, Amnesty International, CrossRoads and the Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice, as well as the K-State Women's Center, the Campaign for Nonviolence and several other organizations.

The film series is a way to encourage K-State students to connect with the world and learn firsthand about social justice and human rights issues, Allen said. Moviegoers can buy one $1 raffle ticket at each film for a snack drawing and a chance to win a $500 international travel grant. The grant can be used for a K-State-affiliated overseas experience during summer 2006. The grant drawing will be the final night of the series. The grant can only be used by someone eligible for K-State affiliated travel, so the winner must be or become a K-State student before summer 2006, or the winner can donate the grant to a K-State student.

"The K-State Campaign for Nonviolence was founded at K-State in 2000. It is a large and growing affiliation of women and men across campus and the community who share the realization that 'nonviolence begins with me,'" Lambert said.

The fall rally also is an invitation to campus and community members to get involved in the nonviolence movement by becoming a Safe Zone volunteer, taking a nonviolence studies or conflict resolution course, joining an associated student group, attending Noontime Yoga sessions or through any number of other ways to practice nonviolence, Allen said.
