FORMER HALLMARK CARDS CEO IRVINE HOCKADAY JR. TO PRESENT K-STATE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

MANHATTAN -- Irvine O. Hockaday Jr., former president and chief executive officer of Hallmark Cards Inc., will be the fall speaker for Kansas State University's College of Business Administration Distinguished Lecture Series.

Hockaday's presentation will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, in the K-State Student Union's Forum Hall. The lecture is free and the public is welcome.

Yar Ebadi, dean of the College of Business Administration, said it's an honor to have a business leader of Hockaday's experience and reputation serve as the college's fall distinguished lecturer.

"This is a special opportunity for our students to hear from one of the best business minds in our region," Ebadi said. "Irv Hockaday is a successful business leader of national renown. His skill and talent as an executive is legend in business circles throughout the Midwest. He also believes in investing back into the community, as evidenced by his many civic responsibilities."

Hockaday joined Hallmark, the world's largest publisher of greeting cards and related products, in 1983. He served on its board of directors from 1978 to 2001.

Prior to joining Hallmark, Hockaday served as president and chief executive officer of Kansas City Southern Industries Inc., a diversified New York Stock Exchange company.

An active volunteer, Hockaday holds various positions in the Greater Kansas City area, including as a member of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, where he also served as a board chair; board chair of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute; a member of the Mayor's Advisory Group; trustee of the Hall Family Foundation; life trustee of the Midwest Research Institute, where he also is a former chairman of the board; and advisory board member of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Bloch Endowment.

Hockaday also is a director of Aquila Inc., Crown Media Holdings Inc., Dow Jones & Company Inc., the Estee Lauder Companies Inc., Ford Motor Co. and Sprint Nextel Corporation. In addition, he is a former chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and trustee emeritus of the Aspen Institute.

He earned a bachelor's in English from Princeton University in 1958 and his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1961. Prior to joining Kansas City Southern Industries in 1968, Hockaday practiced law in Kansas City with the firm of Lathrop, Koontz, Righter, Clagett & Norquist.
