K-STATE'S
JOHN BOYER RECEIVES AMERICAN STATISTICAL ASSOCIATION'S FOUNDERS
AWARD
MANHATTAN
-- John Boyer Jr., professor and head of the department of statistics
at Kansas State University, has received the American Statistical
Association's Founders Award for distinguished and longtime service
to the organization.
Boyer
received the award at the recent annual Joint Statistical Meetings.
Of the 18,000 members in the association, only five were chosen
for the Founders Award this year. Award winners are nominated by
other members of the association and then ultimately selected by
the founders award committee.
According
to the American Statistical Association, Boyer was selected for
the award based on his long and distinguished leadership of a major
university statistics department; for enduring contributions to
Section and Council of Chapters activities including promoting prominence
for statistics in science fair competitions at the state, national
and international level; and for excellence in statistical consulting.
"I
was very honored and excited to win this award. It means a great
deal to me," Boyer said.
Boyer
has been a member of the American Statistical Association since
1976. He was named a Fellow in the association in 1995 after 19
years of service. The association was founded in Boston in 1938
and is one of the country's oldest professional associations.
Boyer
has been at K-State since 1981. He was promoted to full professor
in 1999, served as interim department head in 2001, and was named
head of the department of statistics in 2002. Boyer earned his doctorate
in statistics at Michigan State University in 1976, a master's in
mathematics from Michigan State in 1972, and a bachelor's in mathematics
from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1969. Boyer is a native
of York, Neb., and is a 1965 graduate of York High School.
